Wilmar Koenig

MAY 30th - JULY 12th

Fotografisk Center is pleased and honored to present Wilmar Koenigs first solo exhibition in Denmark. This retrospective spanning over 30 years gives a remarkable insight into a distinguished career in modern German photography.

Wilmar Koenig has been a focal point of the new German art scene since the mid 80's and has been an inspiration for many aspiring photographers. With this in mind, Fotografisk Center invited Wilmar to Copenhagen in 2004 to participate with Krass Clement (who photographed in Berlin) in "Copenhagen-Berlin Exchange", a photographic project and exhibition that ran at the center in 2005. Wilmar Koenig is well known for his co-operation with William Eggleston in the 1980's, the exhibition "Double Exposure" is a good example of their work together and is part of this show at the Fotografisk Center.

These last few years Wilmar Koenig has been photographing churches throughout Europe and mosques in Iran and is specialising more and more in architectural photography. Earlier he had worked both with still lives/objects, his excellent zoological museum series "Les Bestiaiare" is also included here, and portraiture.

The studio in Berlin Mitte is the center for all of Wilmar Koenigs activities. Wilmar Koenigs architectural background can be clearly seen throughout his body of work. His latest project is a series of extremly well composed and symetrical church interiors, his superior technical knowhow enabling him to create impressive works of art. Wilmar Koenig uses an oldfashioned large-format camera that creates images that are rich in detail.

While modern German art perfected and honed its visual sensibility, Wilmar Koenig twisted and worked his subject matter, the images are very different, consciously burdened by human participation and life. Wilmar Koenig is represented in many European and American art collections, among them: Berlinische Galerie (Berlin), Museum für moderne Kunst, Photographie und Architektur (Berlin), Henie-Onstrad Kunstcenter (Oslo), SF MoMA (San Francisco), Forum Stadtpark (Graz), Siemens Kulturprogramm (München) og Groupe Lhoist (Paris).
He has exhibited extensively the world over and recently created the impressive “25 years artist friendship William Eggleston and Wilmar Koenig“ at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (Berlin).

The exhibition has received support from the Danish Arts Council.
