Camilla Holmgren

JANUARY 31st - MARCH 22nd 2009

Fotografisk Center is proud to present Camilla Holmgren and the exhibition and book 'Mirror'. In one of the main series 'Dont look now' she reflects on the relation between the body and the space it inhabits. The images are a woman's take on women and an intimate space is created with very simple and effective means. Camilla Holmgren has taken it on to investigate the relationship between woman, space and mirrors.

The images are characterized by the personal: Camilla Holmgren pushes her own body into the photographic frame and the result functions as an authentic staged space. A fascinating series of self-portraits that not only lets the body occupy this prominent space but also focuses on the fragile, especially striking are the marks and blemishes on the skin. This is a deep and powerful artistic sensibility while at the same time being directly approachable. The images range from monotone interiors to colorful urban Asian landscapes.

Camilla Holmgren (1972) lives in Hong Kong and is educated at The Royal Danish Academy of Art in 2003. She has exhibited extensively internationally and in Denmark, most recently with 'D-STOP' at O'Brian Contemporary in Toronto and 'Nordic Moods - Landscape Photography of our Time' at Arken MoMA, Denmark i 2008. Camilla Holmgren was also recently represented at 'Nuit de L'Europe' at Festival d'Arles and at 'Nuit Blanche' in Paris. She has been the recipient of numerous grants from The Danish Arts Foundation and The Committee for Visual Arts, Denmark. She was awarded a traveling scholarship from Fogtdals Photographic Awards last October.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Aristo/Jens Bertelsen are publishing the book 'Mirror', with texts by Julian Cox and Lars Schwander. Julian Cox is a curator at The High Museum, Atlanta and has previously worked at The J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. It was here that, together with Colin Ford, he published the award-winning book 'Julia Margaret Cameron:The Complete Photographs'.
Lars Schwander is director of The Fotografisk Center, Copenhagen.
