"LOOK ME IN THE EYE"
[NEW RUSSIAN PHOTOGRAPHY]

JANUARY 23rd - MARCH 7th 2010

Photographic Center has the pleasure of presenting the exhibition "Look me in the eye" that showcases new Russian photography featuring Margo Ovcharenko and Evgeny Mokhorev, both are represented by Liza Fetissova / RTR Galerie, Paris. While Margo Ovcharenko sticks to her own self-centered sphere, Evgeny Mokhorev is more focused on documenting the vulnerable teenagers of St. Petersburg who have been sidelined and forgotten under the recent economic upswing. Both create images in which direct contact with the subject matter is important. Not least eye contact.

Margo Ovcharenko [1989] lives and works in Moscow, where she studies at The Rodchenko School of Photography. She is a part of Russia's young generation, who choose to portray their own life and the lives of those around them. Already as a 17-year-old she took portraits with a desire that her motives should not seem posed or setup. Influenced by 19th century painters Ovcarenko creates images with the same attention to light and color. "I concentrate on light, color, silence," she says, "and the aesthetic impact of the work on the viewer without forcing or being brutal. I love taking pictures of young people who stand at the threshold between childhood and adulthood ".

Evgeny Mokhorev [1967] lives and works in St. Petersburg. His photographs use a raw but poetic language. The series with teenagers has been one of the strongest in Russian photography within the last ten years. Evgeny Mokhorev born in St. Petersburg, began taking pictures when he was 8 years old. He subsequently participated in several competitions and exhibitions specifically for creative children. In 1986 he turned professional and in 1988 he became a member of the famous photo club "Zerkalo" ( "mirror").
